Now for the Gotta-Scratch-Yer-Noggin Award - The advertisement for a new
Mailbox Filter program to filter out 100% of junk email .. you guessed it
.. sent out to everyone in the form of JUNK EMAIL! Hmmm. Their motto:
"You've got No Junk Email" should really read "We've got
No Class nor Morals nor Scruples" ..
Not Recommended, but for a laugh go see: www.bestquickreference.com

ow to .. Getting more from your Internet experience ..
This month I am going back to the basics for some of you (and
you know who you are). You may already know some of these tips. If so, maybe you
are learning faster than you think ..
Your computer display .. set your display to 800x600 or
better [1] .. unless you can't read the screen when the text is
that small. Ever consider new glasses? Use F11 to toggle switch your browser to
full screen mode [2]. This lets you see the web pages "all
at once" rather than "dimly, through a keyhole". In a pinch you
can temporarily adjust the text size larger on most pages [3]
unless it is hard coded to a specific text size.
Using the Browser .. you should already know how to point
and click .. so if the mouse pointer changes to say, a pointing finger, then you
can click on that item to jump to another location on the web. Did you know that
you can right-click to get other options pertaining to whatever you are pointing
at. In the web browser, this can be used to open the link in a new window or to
save an image to your computer or set it as the picture on your desktop (called
the 'wallpaper'). If you have a page that you like to start at all the time, set
it as your '"home page" [4]. You can customize the
content and location of most toolbars. I like to set up the Links toolbar as a
quick menu to pages I use a lot. [5].
Cool things to see and do .. Even if you don't have
access to high speed internet (yet) you can check out some of the multimedia
content available over the internet. My favorite LDS Links: the www.lds.org
site has links to Scriptures Online including the Bible and other LDS standard
works. For example go to scriptures.lds.org/ex/20/2-17
(to view the the ten commandments) and click Read (in top right) to have the
text read out loud to you .. or go to www.lds.org/conference
and click one of the links in Watch to view the broadcast of the latest General
Conference .. try also www.byutv.org
to view Windows Media Player re-broadcasts of past LDS discourses.
Finding stuff .. Using Search Engines .. I tend to
use Google www.google.com for most searches.
Even if you start with Yahoo www.yahoo.com or
Netscape search.netscape.com,
Google is used in the background to generate your results (under contract). You
can use other specialty search engines for finding say, images or multimedia.
See www.searchenginewatch.com/links
for a list of search engine pages to try.
Footnotes - The How To details:
-
Setting display size: click Start, Settings,
Control Panel, Display, Settings, move slider in Screen Area. You may also
wish to set the number of colors displayed to at least High 16-bit. Notes:
older systems may not support all combinations of settings. Just try it out.
If it works, a message box is displayed asking, "Do you want to
keep these settings?" Click OK to keep the new setting or do nothing and
it will switch back to the previous settings in a few seconds. [top]
-
Full Screen Mode: Press F11. The F11 toggle
works in newer versions of Internet Explorer and Opera. In Netscape there is
no toggle, but you can collapse the menu bars to get a larger view: click the
'arrow box' at the far left of the menu bar to be collapsed. Tip: the default
setting for full screen mode of Internet Explorer has no address. [top]
-
Adjusting browser text size: In Internet
Explorer: click View, Text Size .. default size is Medium. For Netscape 6:
click View, Text Size .. default size is 100%. In Opera: click View, Zoom ..
default size is 100%. [top]
-
Setting the home page: In Internet
Explorer: click Tools, Internet Options, then in the Home Page section type
the desired start page or click button to set current page as the home
page. In Netscape click Edit, Preferences, Navigator, in Home Pages section
type in desired start page. In Opera: click File, Preferences, then in the
Start section type in desired start page. [top].
-
Configuring the Links toolbar: In Netscape you
can customize your Personal Toolbar .. for directions click
here. Opera has a customizable Personal Bar .. add items by dragging the
Security Padlock icon to the toolbar. With Internet Explorer just use the
Links toolbar. To customize, drag the link from a Web page or the icon
for the current page in the Address bar to your Links bar. Remember, the
toolbars can be hidden as well .. click View, Toolbars, and click to turn them
on and off. Also, once items are on the toolbar, you can rename, remove,
reorder by dragging or right-clicking the icon. [top].
