et Meeting 2.1
Internet Collaboration = Free Long Distance Calls. Want to
talk to another internet user across the country (or around the world)? Don't feel like
paying big dollars to reach out an touch someone? My little brother turned me on to the
new version of Microsoft Net Meeting. I've seen it being installed with Internet Explorer
3.0+, but I never had a chance to use it until recently. It's is a free standalone product
that allows connection of two or more internet users via public ILS servers - so you don't
have to be an Internet Explorer user to get in on the fun - even Netscapers can play. You
do have to be an IBM compatible PC user, however, because the Macintosh version
is still being developed (isn't that always the way .. ha).. Net Meeting supports Audio
and Video transmissions in addition to workgroup collaboration. We tested the Audio
transmission, because I'm cheap. The sound quality is comparable to a telephone
conversation - surprisingly good. Chat screen allows you to type as you talk. The
whiteboard feature initially seemed inadequate - just a Microsoft Paint screen that either
end can scribble onto - but then I found that any screen on the PC's at either end can
paste screen shots into the whiteboard. Cool. A word of caution: The public
ILS servers are hosted by Microsoft and Four11 with no restriction on just who or
what is done with them. My brother experienced a flash from some dufus in Mexico with a
videocam .. It's safest to only contact people you already know ..

X2 vs. K56Flex 56K Modem Protocols. The Telephone
Solicitor Boys from Worldnet called me up the other day. They wanted me to switch to their
GREAT NEW 56k Internet access service. Unfortunately they had no knowledge of the
critical USR X2 vs. K56Flex debate. My modem supports the K56Flex protocol. AT&T has
begun to deploy 56-kilobit-per-second X2 access technology in its network. The Solicitor
Boys really blew it on the technical support front. They claimed any56K modem would
work, because "if it wouldn't work, they would have told us about it, I'm sure
..". Yeah right. BTW, They plan to make the high-speed access available to all
subscribers by June 1998. It may just work for the few of you that paid the big bucks to
support the X2 protocol .. have fun!
etting onto the Internet
Want to create your own DIY website for the internet? Can
you use a word processor? HTML isn't much more difficult than just typing in the text and
then adding simple markers, or 'tags', to indicate to your internet browser where the
headings, paragraphs, and other special formatting elements belong.
