PROBLEM: On the re-boot following reinstallation of Windows 95, you
get the following message:
"A device that is specified in the SYSTEM.INI file is
damaged. It may be needed to run Windows. You may need to run the
Windows setup program again. If the file is included in another
software package, you may need to reinstall the software that uses
this file. C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMM32\filename.VXD."
If you are getting this error message for NTKERN.VXD only, follow
steps 1-3 below:
1. Go to START; Settings; Control Panel; Add/Remove Programs.
2. In the list, double click on USB Supplement for OSR2.
3. Click YES to restart the system.

On the Win95 OSR 2.1\2.5 CD there is a file called REM.PSS. Copy
this to the root of drive c:
rename it to REMUSB.BAT. From the safe mode command promt type REMUSB
[enter]. This will remove the USB drivers. Restart windows goto
add\remove programs and remove USB Support to stop the
error message from showing, then reinstall USB support.

NTKERN.VXD is contained in usbsupp.exe. If you can get to Windows,
running USBSUPP.EXE solves the problem of the error message "A
device file specified in SYSTEM.INI is damaged in
...\NTKERN.VXD".
You can find this file on your Windows 95 CD or
download it from the site below: http://angel.knjc.edu.tw/ftp/Public/Usbsupp/

The ntkern.vxd file is a part of the vmm32.vxd conglomerate file.
UpgradeNewer versions located in the VMM32 windows folder override the
version in the vmm32.vxd file, but normally it does not and will not
exist as a separate file on your harddrive. The only way to recreate
vmm32.vxd is to boot to the dos prompt, delete
c:\windows\system\vmm32.vxd, and then to re-install windows on top of
itself.
If you are unable to get into windows or even safe mode, try moving
the ntkern.vxd file out of the C:\windows\system\vmm32 directory. This
should allow you to at least boot into windows where you can
then follow the advice that is given above to correct the problem.
Also you might try the combination of deleting the vmm32.vxd and the
ntkern.vxd as well. This worked for me in a second scenario too. Hope
this will work for those of you who cannot even get into windows!

If nothing else works, you can always rename the entire c:\windows
folder as c:\win.old and then reload Win9x from your CD. First make
sure you have a bootable diskette with the Win9x system files and CD
driver. You will also need the Win9x CD and all driver disks for your
modem, video card, sound card, etc. Then press F8 at boot to get menu,
select DOS Prompt, then use this command to rename the windows folder
.. MOVE C:\WINDOWS C:\WIN.OLD .. and then install windows to a new
c:\windows folder. The downside of this method is that then you have
to reinstall all the other program disks like word processors and
games etc. to restore the system registry settings ..
